Hello!
I want to change my theme to Avenue, but when I clicked on “try the theme” it replaced my current website with the test site. YIKES! Is there a way to design it out before it is live? I thought I had to click “publish” it for it to be active. Do I need to purchase them theme fully so it appears in my theme library to have control over what is consumer facing?

It only shows your site as a preview, it doesn’t replace the current theme.
And once you install it, it will be in your site’s ‘Theme library’ list.
You can customize it and see if it fits your store before you buy it. With the trial you cannot edit the code and publish it, you can just go to Customize and Preview to see how it looks.

Thanks! I added the theme to try, and I went to our URL, puppetpelts.com, and the unedited theme was showing up. Maybe that was just on my computer? But, I had to go into my current theme and resave it for it to switch back. Super weird.
The Avenue theme is now showing up as a trial though, so I think if I edit it from there, it won’t jack up our live site. Fingers crossed. Thanks!
