Changing Theme's of your store

Topic summary

A store owner is considering switching from a custom-built theme to Shopify’s “Industry” theme and wants to understand the implications.

What remains unchanged:

  • Products, prices, and collections (stored in Shopify’s database, not the theme)
  • Payment method settings (though may need reactivation)

What requires attention:

  • Layout, navigation, and custom styling must be manually reconfigured for the new theme
  • Custom forms and theme-specific customizations need to be reimplemented
  • Custom code and app integrations may require adjustments

Recommended precautions:

  • Back up the current theme before switching
  • Test the Industry theme on a staging site or duplicate store
  • Thoroughly test the checkout process after migration
  • Document any custom code or apps currently in use

Hi All, I have a custom built themed store and want to change it to the Shopify “Industry” Themed store.

What happens if I change to Industry themed store from my store:

  • with all my products, prices and collections set-up?
  • with my payment method loaded for check-out
  • with all my forms etc. that I’ve built in

WHAT MUST I KNOW OR WATCH-OUT FOR BEFORE DOING THIS MIGRATION TO ANOTHER THEMED STORE?

Would really appreciate some advise

  • When you switch from your custom-built theme, your products, prices, and collections should stay intact since they’re stored in Shopify’s database, not the theme, but you’ll need to manually reconfigure your layout, navigation, and any custom styling to match the Industry theme’s structure.
  • Your payment methods and forms (like contact forms) should carry over, but you’ll want to double-check that they’re still functional and properly integrated. Test the checkout process thoroughly to ensure everything works seamlessly
  • Before migrating, I recommend backing up your current theme, testing the Industry theme on a staging site or duplicate store, and noting any custom code or apps you use, as they might need adjustments to work with the new theme

Hi @EliteProducts1

If you want to switch to new theme, it will not affect your products, prices, collections, or payment methods, as these are managed separately in your Shopify admin. However, there are some considerations to keep in mind:

  1. Regarding to Products, Prices, and Collections: These will remain unchanged because they are not tied to your theme. They are the setting on Shopify.

  2. For Payment Methods: Your payment settings will also remain inactive. You can re-activate it on shopify payment.

  3. Custom Forms or other theme customization: Those customizations applied on the theme editor or code editor are specific to the theme you are using. You will need to re-implement these customizations in the new theme.

I hope the information is helpful.
