Hello, I recently upgraded my shop to the Basic plan, and to my surprise, I was offered a discount for a month of Shopify at $3. I wasn’t expecting it, but I accepted it and didn’t think much about it other than that it must be a holiday deal. I didn’t input any codes; it just automatically gave me a discount for 1 month for $3. Well, three days later, I was then charged $39.00 for the month. That means I paid over the amount for a month with Shopify because of the fake $3/ month deal they gave me. I would like some help with this as soon as possible.
Topic summary
Issue: A merchant accepted an automatic $3 one‑month promo when upgrading to the Basic plan, then was charged $39 three days later for the same month.
Context: The store had been on “Pause and Build” (a reduced‑fee paused state) before upgrading. The merchant expected the Basic plan to be $29/month and believes they were overcharged.
Evidence: Screenshots of billing history and receipts show a charge for “1 Basic plan” at $39 alongside the $3 charge. Images are central to understanding the discrepancy.
Community input: Recommendations to contact Shopify Support and verify whether other charges (apps, theme purchases, or a new store) might explain the amount. One comment suggested the $3 line resembled an app fee; the merchant maintains it’s only the Shopify subscription.
Latest update: The merchant says Support attributed the $39 to reopening the store, but the receipt labels it as a Basic plan charge, indicating conflicting explanations.
Status: Unresolved. Open questions: whether the $39 is a reopening fee or plan charge, and how it should interact with the $3 promo.
- This isn’t the appropriate venue for such a complaint. Take this matter to Shopify Support.
- Make sure you’re not mistaken. Many times people sign up for a new store thinking they are getting a discount on their current plan.
- A matter of 3 dollars is of little importance. Consider accepting the loss. The amount of time and energy spent on recovering 3 bucks may turn out to be worth hundreds.
Hey @AsarDraws,
Charging $39USD for the first month does’t mean they charge for the 2 months.
The Shopify basic charges per month are $29USD.
Shopify never over charges. It might be the billing of the Paid apps that you currently using on your store. Or it might be the charges for the theme if you bought any.
So, if possible can you share the screenshot of that Charges so that I can take a look into it. Shopify clearly show the charges detail in the receipt. And this receipt they email you.
Waiting to hear back from you.
Thanks
Hello, thank you so much for your kindness, patience, and empathy. I will attach my screenshots to this comment. It shows my history of payments. I was on the pause and build part of the plan for a bit while I was on my Etsy shop, and then got offered the $3 for the month, and then got charged for $39 for the basic plan, and then I looked it up and like you said its supposed to be $29 so I seem to have been charged more.
Tagging you since my last response didn’t. ![]()
The 3 dollars look like an app that calculated something.
Its not from an app, I was subscribing to subscriptions with Shopify only and they charged it. Here is a screenshot saying I paid for 1 basic plan for that amount.
Please contact support; we cannot help you with this issue here.
I am currently in discussions with them right now. They said it was the cost to reopen my store but the receipt says otherwise. Thank you for taking your time to comment.
