Cleaning up old app code

Topic summary

A user is seeking to clean up an old Shopify website that has accumulated leftover code from previously removed apps and wants to restore the theme to its original state.

Solution provided:

  • Navigate to Online Store > Themes
  • Click the ellipsis (…) on the current theme and select “Edit code”
  • Open files marked with a black circle indicator
  • Revert these files to their original state

Important caveat:
Multiple respondents warn that this revert process will also remove any custom code or specific customizations that were manually added to the theme files, not just app-related code.

The discussion appears resolved with a clear step-by-step solution, though users should proceed carefully to avoid losing desired customizations.

Is there a way in Shopify to revert theme code back to original? I’m working on an old website that had many apps installed and removed, but there is a lot of old code left behind. Is there an easy way to reinstall a theme does does it remove all added code?

Hi @usdentalinc

You can do that from your Online Store > Themes > in your current theme, click “…” > Edit code, open all files that have a black cycle next to them, and revert your file to the original.

Please note that this action will also remove any custom codes you have added for specific customizations.

Hello,

I am San from MS Web Designer.

To undo or remove the app code from your theme file and restore it to the original version, follow these steps:

  1. Go to your Online Store.
  2. Click on Themes in your current theme.
  3. Select the ellipsis (…) and choose Edit code.
  4. Open all files with a black cycle next to them.
  5. Revert these files to their original state.

Please be aware that any custom code you’ve added for specific customizations will be removed as well.

Do let me know in case of any concern.

Regards,

San
