I’ve already launched two free apps on the App Store:
AppSupermarket‑Bulk Editor
AppSupermarket‑Badge&Timer
Both are completely free right now.
I’m now planning my 3rd free app and I’d really like to get some feedback from merchants before I lock in the final direction. I want to build something lightweight, simple to set up, and helpful for conversion.
At the moment, I’m considering these two directions:
Lightweight upsell popup on PDP / Cart
Small popup on product or cart page
Recommends related / add‑on products
Very simple setup (choose products/collections, where to show, basic text & style)
Product-level custom discount code shown on PDP
Set discount codes for specific products
Show the code directly on the product page with a copy button(or auto apply direclty)
Simple UI, works together with Shopify’s built‑in discounts
These are just my current ideas. If many merchants feel a different kind of simple free tool would be more useful, I’m open to changing direction.
I’d love to hear from you:
Which of the two above would help you more in your store, and why?
Have you used similar apps before? What did you like or dislike?
Is there another small, free app idea you wish existed but haven’t found yet?
Your feedback will directly influence what I build next.
Thanks a lot for any thoughts or suggestions you can share!
As someone who works with Shopify stores regularly, I’d probably vote for the product-level discount code display idea.
The upsell/cross-sell category is already very crowded, with many established apps offering popups, bundles, and recommendations. A product-specific discount code solution feels more focused and solves a clear merchant need.
Some features I’d find useful:
Display a product-specific promotion directly on the PDP.
Copy code button.
Auto-apply discount option.
Mobile-friendly design.
Compatibility with Shopify’s native discount system.
Minimal impact on page speed.
Another idea worth considering is a free shipping progress bar, since many merchants use it to help increase average order value.
Whatever direction you choose, I think the biggest opportunity is keeping the app lightweight, easy to set up, and focused on solving one problem really well.
If you’re looking for feedback, testing, or feature suggestions during development, feel free to reach out. I’m happy to share ideas and help validate use cases from a merchant perspective.
I can comment from a Shopify app dev perspective, and as some one who has both upsell and discount apps in our suite. Both these categories are extremely crowded and competitive. So if you looking at app store being your primary traction channel, this will definitely be challenging. That said, both are validated problem spaces, and there’s always potential to come up with a new user experience that’s not there in the existing apps. The discount display sounds a little more narrowed down for me, and if I were you, I would consider picking that up first, and see if I can come up with a unique user experience that’s more converting than the existing options. But like I mentioned, however unique / great the app can be, the challenge will be getting traction amidst this competition.
Yes, the competition seems incredibly fierce. My main focus is on creating a lightweight, easy-to-use product. I’m unsure if that will be well-received by users.
