Color swatch shows all pictures of all colors before a specific color is selected

Topic summary

A Shopify store owner using the Dawn theme with the “GLO color swatch” app faces an issue where product pages initially display all images from all color variants (47+ images) simultaneously, creating an overwhelming experience. The desired behavior is to pre-select and display only the default color variant (black) images on page load, then switch images when users select different color swatches.

Technical Details:

  • The app uses alt text tags (e.g., “black”) to associate images with color variants
  • Images filter correctly after a color is clicked, but no variant is pre-selected on initial page load
  • One contributor identified the issue involves “JS code click function” and requires backend code modifications to both the click functionality and media gallery

Resolution Status:

  • The original poster hired a Shopify developer to fix the issue but doesn’t know the specific code changes made
  • Another user (MRamzan) claims to have solved it and shared a YouTube tutorial link: https://youtu.be/NL08pJYP4y
  • Multiple users are seeking the same solution for their stores

I’m using your color swatch on shopify Dawn and it’s really great! But, I have a problem: when you first enter the product page it shows all images of all colors to start with. First after selecting one color it limits the images to the selected color. Is there any way I can fix this? Or do you have a link to a forum where this is solved?

Ideally the first color option (black) is preselected and only black option pictures are shown.

Hi @Thomasmbie ,

I have checked the swatches options on the Product Page. They are working exactly the same as you mentioned. My question is how do you want them to work now? You want to show only selected color images for all options including the pre selected black color?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks,

EcomRAZ

As it is now, when you enter the product page you see all 47 (or something) images shown at once. I would like to only show the black pictures as a default. When another color is selected then switch pictures to the according model as it does now.

So overall this problem is first time you enter products, its currently overwhelming with images since all color option images are show to start with.

Hi @Thomasmbie ,

Got it. Please go to Products in Admin and check the images assigned to the default variant black. Or you can give me access to website and I will do that.

Thanks,

EcomRAZ

I’m using the app called “GLO color swatch”. The way this is set up is by editing the alt text to “black” or what color the image should be shown at. The issue is that when the product page is first entered there is not selected a color yet and therefore it shows all color images. If you click “black” it will filter so it only shows according images.

I need to inspect the app and backend code for that. Can you give me access?

Yes, can you please send a collaborator request?

Sure. Will send now

Any other ideas? Or tutorials from similar cases? EcomRAZ has a solution but it requires hiring a developer (“The issue is with the JS code click function”).

Hi @Thomasmbie ,

It involves the backend code modification as I have inspected the media gallery issue there as well

@Thomasmbie

Hi I saw your page and it shows just the color images which you selected, can you share your code with me please?

I also wanna do that.

Can you help with the solution please.

I had to pay a shopify coder to fix it, no idea what the changes to the code was.

Thank you for your prompt reply

I have solved this issue. Here is the reference:
