Column Images & URL Links

Topic summary

Topic: Making multi‑column section images clickable (linkable) in a Shopify store using the Dawn theme (v13.0.1).

Key questions from the store owner:

  • Will custom code need to be re‑applied after theme updates?
  • Are there themes (free/paid) that support clickable column images without code?
  • Is there a step‑by‑step guide or a cost estimate for custom coding?

Main replies and options:

  • Customizations generally get removed when updating the theme; however, a developer states a newly added custom section can persist through updates.
  • Premium themes with built‑in support were suggested; examples given: Prestige, Impact. (No free theme confirmed as supporting this out of the box.)
  • Recommendation to hire a Shopify developer for a bespoke section; the responder offers services.

Decisions and next steps:

  • The store owner prefers a theme that natively supports this to avoid repeated coding but is open to custom code if it survives updates.
  • They requested theme suggestions and a price; the responder invited direct contact.
  • Conversation has moved to private messages for pricing/details.

Status: Unresolved publicly; no tutorial/code shared; theme choice and costs pending.

Hi,

I am about to redesign my store, and the main key change I want to make is to make column images clickable.

I know there are lots of posts or threads/topics about this already, but I would really appreciate some personal advice.

I am currently using an older version of the dawn theme 13.0.1.

I understand to make the column images clickable via URL link, in the dawn theme I need to apply code for it to do so, I am happy to give this a go, I do however have some questions.

First question, if I update the theme to the latest version. Would I need to input the code each time I update the theme?

Second question, are there any themes, free or paid themes, which have this available without needing to change the code? Happy to explore paying for a theme, although would rather it be a free theme.

Third question, does anyone have a walkthrough or can provide a step by step set of instructions for changing the code, including the code? Or what would someone charge to do this?

Thank you in advance.

Will

Hey @Plumblikeaking

  • To answer your first question, yes if you update the theme then all the custom coding that was performed on the theme will be removed.

  • To answer your second question, yes there are a lot of premium themes that have the type of section that you’re looking for, Let me know if you want me to suggest you some.

  • To answer your third question, I would suggest you to hire a Shopify developer for that as it will require custom coding involved in your theme files who can develop you a section exactly as per your requirements. Feel free to let me know if you want me to help you out in it :slightly_smiling_face:

If I managed to help you then, don’t forget to Like it and Mark it as Solution!

Could you please suggest some themes.

I don’t see the point in paying for someone or doing the coding myself if and when I need to update the theme, to have to repeat the process. So I think a theme, which allows this as standard is definitely the way forward.

Thanks for such a quick reply

If I custom code a section in your theme files then even after updating the theme, nothing will happen to section as it will be a completely new section which I’ll add in the theme so updating the theme won’t be an issue, other than that there are a lot of themes like Prestige or Impact that that can help you out. Feel free to reach out if you want it custom coded :slightly_smiling_face:

I have sent you a message, rather new to the forums, so not sure if that is what you meant by connecting?
