So I have a store on Wix (almost 7 months). I want to switch to Shopfy. I have my new Shopify store built, products, customers & contacts all migrated. I am having a problem connecting my Godaddy domain. First question is: Do I need to disconnect my domain from wix before hand? If so, after that, my Shopify store should connect if I follow the directions provided by Shopify right?
Thanks for reaching out to the Shopify Community today with your domain question!
You will want to make sure your GoDaddy domain is disconnected from it’s previous connectionbefore connecting it to your Shopify store. You can try to connect it to your Shopify store now without disconnecting it from Wix, but it likely won’t connect at all and flag you with some errors.
You’ll want to disconnect your GoDaddy domain from Wix. Us here at Shopify aren’t too ‘in the know’ about GoDaddy’s internal settings area but you should be able to either cut the connection from your Wix settings or from GoDaddy directly.
After that, you’ll take the following steps:
Login to your Shopify Admin
Go to ‘Settings’ and then ‘Domains’
Click ‘Connect Existing Domain’ and enter in your GoDaddy domain
Our system will then attempt to automatically connect the domain for you with no extra steps! You just need to provide it with some time to propagate (24-72 hours, but it’s usually much quicker) and then you’ll have your domain connected as needed!
Let me know if you have any questions about this information! I’ll keep my eyes peel for a reply.
Thanks so much for that screenshot. It’s super helpful to have those and it shows me exactly what seems to be causing the issue.
What appears to be going on is that your GoDaddy Domain’s A Record and CNAME values are still pointing to Wix, and this is preventing you from connecting it to Shopify. You have to change those values to the Shopify requested values and that should resolve things. I’ll provide you with the steps below.
Login to your GoDaddy account and navigate to your Domain’s DNS Settings
Once there, you should see an area called ‘A Record.’ Remove the information that is currently there that would have been provided from Wix (so the IP address coloured red in your screenshot) and replace it with this IP address: 23.227.38.65
Once you’ve fixed the A Record, scroll until you find the section called ‘C Name’. You will remove the information there from Wix (so the coloured red values from your screenshot) and replace it with the following: shops.myshopify.com
Save these settings for your Domain within GoDaddy.
Return to Shopify and attempt to connect the domain again.
This should resolve things and allow for the domain to connect as expected. DNS changes may take some time to propagate on GoDaddy’s end but we can’t say for certain just because that’s information coming from GoDaddy’s side and not ours. If you feel like you need some assistance with these above steps, you should reach out to GoDaddy and they can provide you guided support on changing your DNS settings within their dashboard.
Give those steps a try and let me know how things go! I’m here to provided you continued support if you run into any troubles.
Hey there, @Petmepremium . Thanks for jumping in on this thread here!
So, I did some testing. I tried to automatically connect the ‘petmepremium.com’ domian to my test store, and got the same messaging about ‘purchasing’ the domain. This suggests that nobody actually owns the ‘petmepremium.com’ domain.
I decided to take a closer look at your screenshots, and in the screenshot where you show your DNS settings for your GoDaddy domain, you can actually see the domain in the URL bar there. You have a spelling mistake in the domain you purchased from GoDaddy. Instead of owning ‘petmepremium.com’, you own ‘petmepremuim.com.’ You put a spelling mistake into the domain when you purchased it, explaining why you’re unable to connect this domain to Shopify, as what you’re trying to connect to Shopify isn’t actually something you own due to this spelling mistake.
My recommendation to you here is for you to reach out to GoDaddy Support to let them know that you meant to purchase the ‘petmepremium.com’ domain, but made a spelling error when completing your purchase. They should be able to assist you with getting the correct domain. Once you’ve done that, you just need to follow the steps to connect your third party domain automatically, and it’ll work!
Hi there, @roztify . Thanks for jumping in on this thread! It’s good to meet you!
To set some expectations, we’re unable to access accounts that are located on third party platforms, such as GoDaddy, so we won’t be able to go into your account any make any changes ourselves, or investigate what a change doesn’t stick on their platform.
For now, my recommendation would be to copy the A record IP provided to you from Shopify in your screenshot, add it to the A Record of your DNS settings, and ensure that you ‘SAVE’ the change in your DNS settings. If you hit ‘save’ and the change doesn’t stick, at that point I would recommend reaching out to the Support Team of the platform that houses your DNS settings to determine why the change isn’t sticking.
