Crazy default behavior for Quick Add, "Choose Options" pop-up

I am using the basic Dawn theme. I am editing my collection template and using the “Enable Quick Add Button” feature. When I test the page, I see “Choose Options” buttons since there are variants. When I click that button, I get a large square pop-up that is mostly blank, the product image is shoved into the upper right corner, and the title text is gigantic.

Why is this the default design and how do I modify it?
