I prefer the new version of Customer Accounts using the second factor authentication, however the approach to account creation in the new version is unintuitive and confusing so I will have to revert. A message for Shopify is that the account creation in the new version needs to be more obvious.

This may not necessarily fully address your issue with the new Customer Account system, but Shopify recently released an improvement for this that allows updating the text on the page: Customize text on the sign-in page for customer accounts - Shopify Changelog

For example, justing being able to change the default “Sign in” text to something like “Sign in or Register” may help with the customer experience and preventing confusion.
