I’d like to be able to create a collection that’s based on a range of dates that the products were added to the inventory. I like to discount items that have been in our inventory for more than 6 months, and though I’m currently making it work through a very roundabout way, I was wondering if there’s an easier way to do this. Maybe an app?

At this time, there is no way to do this directly from the admin, however, it may be worth looking into this app: Collection Sort. It looks like they offer a handful of different sort type parameters and may have one that works for your needs.
That being said, I also suggest a workaround that involves tagging the products you wish to discount for your collection and using the tags to build an automated collection. Another option would be to simply create a manual collection and click and drag the sort order you wish to have the products in.
Keep in mind, when building an automated collection and a condition uses product tags, you need to enter the exact tag as a condition value.
For example, to set up a condition that selects products tagged with accessories:
- Select Product tag from the first drop-down list.
- Select is equal to from the second drop-down list.
- Enter
accessories.

If you are updating prices manually one at time first try using the poorly documented search syntax in the products admin search box to speed things up. Then just select all those products then use the export to export the selection ,or use the bulk editor.
Example:
created_at:>2021-07-01 created_at:<2021-07-30

To skip the search approach there are also export apps, such as ez-export or matrixify, that can export the created_at data in a product CSV to make a more optimized workflow with excel and one of it’s features to filter by date, update the relevant product prices then reimport with new prices.

For apps there’s tools like mechanic to script such automations, I don’t think they have this exact workflow but some similar ones can be found and rewritten with the proper logic.

Alternatively, and hypothetically, this may be possible with shopify’s flow to add/remove tags from such target products to put them into a collection for bulk editing or targeting with a discount but there is a time limit on scheduling in flow and I haven’t time to toy with this workaround.
Advanced users with less than 50 products could also create a custom liquid template in an unpublished to make a small custom CSV of products based on dates.

You sure could do this task with the Matrixify app, and the process would be quite simple.
Create new export in the app and select export “Products” with “Basic Columns” and “Inventory / Variants”. Then click on the filters button where you can apply a filter by the Created At date and specify the date range you need. In the exported file update the “Variant Price” and “Variant Compare at Price” fields as per your needs and import your file into the app to update.
