I signed up with Shopify assuming it’s a modern-day platform but I am shocked that when I am trying to make a payment to a wholesaler, who apparently has a well-developed modern fulfillment system, is not processing my order and asking me for all the personal information. First, to upload my driver’s license which I did. Then the support person asks me for my PayPal user ID and front and back of the credit card. I have already entered all the information in their system and they acknowledge they have it, but yet the support wants to see the copy of my credit card? Has any other Shopify store owner gone through this stuff? It sounds weird and a bit suspicious to me. Any thoughts, suggestions?
Hi there @dbshop !
Would you be able to clarify for me which payment exactly you’re referring to here?
You mentioned that this was a payment being made to a wholesaler or supplier, can you confirm exactly where and how this payment is being made and any other context you can provide here?
Generally speaking, payment gateways of most sorts will have some sort of due diligence to perform in terms of Know Your Customer or other legal requirements where they are.
If you can confirm exactly what sort of payment you’re referring to here and how it’s being made, that will help us to determine how you can get support for this!
If your ever uncomfortable with a request from the support of any service simply tell them so.
Legitimate services will not take offense at an abundance of caution on your part to protect your identity and accounts. Legitimate services will plainly provide methods for you to verify everyone and everything is what they say it is.
When concerned, make sure all support emails are from an actual legitimate source.
If in doubt you should initiate the contact to a known verifiable support email , or phone number , to rule out spoof/phishing attacks impersonating incoming support emails/calls.
As for the paypal-id AND a credit card presumably that’s as a payment backup, or in setting up payment gateways.
Of course when in doubt keep an eye on any involved accounts and immediately communicate any strange transaction behavior to the support of the involved services.
If your asked to upload a file somewhere , typically the upload area should be on one of that services websites , i.e. the shopify admin, or at the website of a legitimate provider of ID verification tools. For example supports not going to ask you to upload sensitive docs to a random dropbox folder.
All that said,
It’s not unheard for a service to want photographic proof that a physical identification, or credit card , is in your possession.
Verification processes are complex so while services that have idents on file tend to not ask for them again, they still might when first getting setup, or when wanting to further secure an account.
When in doubt be direct and communicate suspicion.
