Cross link products using meta definition

I have my shopify store setup in such a manner that each product color is a different SKU.

So I am cross linking products different colours (of essentially same product but different SKUs) using custom data meta definitions. However, I want to customise the thumbnail of the product to show a simple colour and not the product thumbnail. Please help
