Currency Conversions

I’m receiving international orders with the values in the customer’s currency, and with only the converted total in my currency (USD). Is it possible to have Shopify display the values to the customer in their currency at the time of purchase and the converted values in my currency when I receive the order?

Thank you

Good question. Unfortunately, the answer is a bit complex.

I think you are asking to see a line-item breakdown in both USD and in the customer currency. For the sake of example, let’s say a buyer in Europe bought a sweater and paid for shipping and taxes. You would want to see the sweater price in both USD and EUR, and similarly both currencies for shipping, both for taxes, etc.

In reality, orders can change over time. After the buyer purchased the sweater, you might edit the order to change the quantity - but now that time has passed, the exchange rate is different. Or you might issue a partial refund as an apology for production or shipping delays - again at a different exchange rate. So we might have three different exchange rates for the same sweater:

  • initial purchase
  • order edit
  • partial refund

That makes it very difficult to give you a consistent, clear exchange rate per item. Instead, we give you the exchange rate where it is consistent - at the payment level. When a payment is made, there is a single exchange rate on that payment, and we display that to you.

If you want to get a sense of how much money you are making for an individual product, you can use our analytics reports, such as "Total sales by product" or “Gross profit by product” which can help show a summary for that product across all your orders at once.
