Topic summary
Goal: add a single opt-in style checkbox at the end of checkout to request permission for sharing behind-the-scenes content on social media (image provided for reference).
Current capability: Only Shopify Plus supports checkout extensibility (custom content/fields in checkout). Non‑Plus plans cannot add custom boxes to checkout to protect security and integrity.
Workarounds for non‑Plus:
- Use a third‑party app (e.g., “Terms”) to present a consent box on the cart page or upon add‑to‑cart.
- Create a Terms/Conditions page stating orders may be selected for social media; a policy‑drafting tool was shared.
Clarification on security vs. Plus: A participant questioned why Plus allows it if it’s a security issue. Staff explained limiting checkout customization to Plus reduces exposure to bad actors by restricting access; many desired customizations can be implemented outside checkout. Shopify is evaluating access across plans.
Outcome/status: No native solution for standard plans. Actionable path is to gather consent before checkout or upgrade to Shopify Plus. Discussion remains open with future plan access under assessment.
Hi there! I am trying to figure out a way to add in a box at the end of my checkout process similar to this! I want it to just be one box they can click/unclick similar to the email offer opt-in boxes. I want mine to say “I’d love to see the behind-the-scenes of my order being made on your Social Media!”
Hi there, @KNew ! Thanks for taking the time to reach out to the Shopify Community forums with your question around adding content to your checkout pages! My name is Imogen. It’s good to meet you!
Unless you’re using the Shopify Plus plan, you’re unable to add custom content like this to your checkout pages. This is to ensure the integrity and the security of the checkout process remains intact for you and your business. Instead of adding this to a checkout page, you can use a third party app like Terms to present a consent box on the cart page, or when a product is added to a customer’s cart. You can also create a Terms of Service or Conditions page where you can outline for customers that their orders may be selected for social media content! We have a tool here you can look into for helping you draft up such information!
Imogen,
If this is to ensure the integrity and the security of the checkout process why is it allowed on Shopify Plus? Are checkouts on Shopify Plus not secure, or do they lack integrity?
Hi @ST0908
Great question and thank you for joining the conversation as well.
Limiting access to checkout extensibility to our Shopify Plus plan allows us to maintain a higher level of security for our checkout system. This helps us limit the amount of possible bad actors that could alter the checkout experience on their store. Many times, the customizations merchants want to have on their checkout flow can be added in other areas of the store without compromising the checkout experience at all. That being said, we definitely recognize that having access to checkout extensibility opens up a huge range of possibilities for a business and there is definitely a lot of value in that option for smaller businesses as well. We continue to assess access to these features across different plans. In the interim, if this is a feature you strongly desire, you can definitely consider looking into our Plus plan for your store.
