Custom Commission Artwork Invoicing

I’m working on building an art studio business where I sell original works, prints, and custom commissions. I can navigate how to use Shopify for the first two, but I’m having trouble figuring out the third (custom commissions).

I saw another community discussion post where an app was recommended that could customize price based on size (sq ft). But I don’t think my pricing will be consistent on a size basis since there are a lot of other variables that will be hard to set in an app (like complexity, how well I know the subject matter of the drawing, etc.).

I’d like a way to develop a price manually based on conversations I have with the buyer, and can then invoice in two installments (down payment and delivery), but I can’t figure out the best way to do that.

My first thought is to just create a “Custom Commission” product that doesn’t have a price and a product page template that doesn’t show price or a buy button and just has a contact form. Then I can make a manual invoice using that product, but set the price based on what was negotiated for the work.

Am I on the right track or is there a better way to accommodate this kind of work?

Thanks, Ben

Hey @BenFisherArt ,

based on information you shared, I assume that the easiest way how to solve this is to create a new product page template, hide the price, buttons such as add to cart and purchase, and add a button for contacting you (this will redirect customers to contact page), or add a contact form.

You can also add additional information for these “custom products” – such as that the prices range from X to Y so that the customers have at least some kind of information about the prices.

If there are lots of variability, it’s hard to say whether you would achieve the desired “scenario” with the apps. You can of course give them a try but if you’re looking for the easiest and quick solution, I think that the new product page template can be the best one.

Let me know if you have more questions!
