My custom nameservers keep resetting back to Shopify defaults. What all is required for custom nameservers to stick? I’ve got the below configured, yet Shopify keeps resetting back to default nameservers. (edited for privacy where customer.com is replaced with real domain on my nameserver)
The issue with custom nameservers resetting is likely due to Shopify automatically managing DNS settings when the domain is within their system. To resolve this, I recommend turning off domain protection so you can control the nameservers and DNS settings without interference from Shopify.
If you prefer a quick and hassle-free solution, I can handle the domain transfer and configuration for you. Feel free to DM me to get started with a professional fix!
Hello and thanks for the response. I’m a new partner myself, so I’m trying to learn how to resolve this issue on my own.
There doesn’t appear to be any setting called Domain Protection. I know I could transfer this domain to different registrar, but trying to avoid that.
What’s confusing is that Shopify control panel allowes me to set custom nameservers temporarily, but then they reset back to Shopify nameservers after a few hours.
So I am still trying to understand and resolve this issue of using custom nameservers for a Shopify domain. The control panel lets me set it temporarily, but it doesn’t stick. Is there any way to get a log message why it is resetting?
For what it’s worth this problem seems to have finally stopped. The last thing I did was go into the settings on Shopify and clear out all the existing domain settings. So even though I was setting custom nameserver, I also had to clear out the built-in www, txt, mx, etc records. The only remaining record I couldn’t delete was the built-in A record.
I am having a similar issue, i am able to set nameservers, but they are not propogating. It still shows the old nameservers whenever I do a DNS check. Is that what you were struggling with?
Yes, basically. I would set the custom nameservers and a DNS check would show them for maybe a few hours. But then, always by the next day it’s back to the Shopify nameservers.
Try to delete the existing DNS records in Shopify control panel before setting custom nameserver again as that seemed to fix it for me. There is always a “restore defaults” button you can press to restore them. Also remove the “www” (subdomain) entry on the page prior to the custom DNS settings.
My custom nameservers are now still working after a few weeks, but it took some tenacity.
