UK merchant with GBP store currency has an ROI customer who wants to pay in GBP, but at final checkout (Shop Pay) the currency switches to EUR. They ask if the switch is due to the customer’s location and whether a GBP account in ROI avoids exchange fees.
Cause: The Geolocation app uses the shopper’s location to set checkout currency; an Ireland address triggers EUR. Forcing GBP for one customer could affect others.
Options suggested:
Disable Geolocation so all customers see and pay in GBP only.
Use a currency conversion app: show prices in various currencies while browsing, but keep checkout in the store’s default (GBP).
Fees: Paying from a GBP bank account in ROI might avoid currency conversion fees, but the customer’s bank could still charge international or other fees. Advise the customer to confirm with their bank.
Outcome/status: Guidance provided; no action taken by the merchant yet. Issue remains open with recommended next steps to adjust currency settings or app choice.
We have a customer who resides in the Republic of Ireland and wishes to pay for her order in GBP.
Our business is located in the UK and the main bank account with our Shopify store is GBP.
We installed the Geolocation app which allows customers to change the currency on our shop but when they get to the final checkout through ShopPay their currency reverts to Euro. I will fire out a few questions below and any help is very much appreciated.
Is the currency reverting to Euro at the final checkout due to the fact they reside in Ireland? If so is there a way to ensure the currency remains in GBP?
If the customer pays with a GBP banking account from the ROI then they won’t have to pay any currency exchange fee?
I think when they get to the final checkout and the order total is in Euros this is putting them off proceeding with the payment.
I understand you are looking for some clarification on why your customer is unable to checkout in GBP. This is generally due to the Geolocation settings in your Shopify store. The Geolocation app will customer’s location to determine the currency displayed during checkout. Since the customer resides in The Republic of Ireland, which uses Euro as its currency, the checkout will automatically switch to Euro. While you can adjust your settings for this customer, it can cause other customers to run into issues if they aren’t looking to checkout in GBP.
One option would be to completely disable the Geolocation feature. You can disable the Geolocation app or any other geolocation settings in your Shopify store. This will allow customers to only see your store’s GBP currency.
Instead of using the Geolocation app, you could use a currency conversion app. These apps allow you to display prices in different currencies when browsing, but ultimately the checkout will remain in your store’s default of GBP.
Regarding the concern of paying the exchange fees; If the customer pays with a GBP bank account from the Republic of Ireland, they might not have to pay any currency exchange fees. However, it’s important to note that the customer’s bank may still charge additional fees for international transactions or currency conversions. It’s recommended they consult with their bank to understand their specific policies and fees related to GBP transactions from the Republic of Ireland.
