Customers cannot create accounts

This used to work for me 2 years ago when I started this migration but now it seems to have gone missing.

I removed the “Online Store” sales channel a while back because it was causing problems and I have my own website. I just wanted to use shopify for its admin and for checkout + buy button + cart. Most of that is working just the ability for customers to create accounts is missing.

Also it seems that I cannot add the Online Store back to my shopify settings.

Does anyone else have this problem? I have customer accounts set to optional. The documentation says I need an Online Store for this to work but I removed it and now I cannot add it back. Also I’m not sure how to communicate to users that they need to shop on the main site and not use the store at all.

Thanks

You can add your sales channel back by clicking the sales channels on the sidebar and adding it. (As in the screenshot).

Is there anything that prevents you from doing it?

What is the exact issue?

Were you able to solve the issue?

Thanks for getting back to me. Sorry I did not respond yet. I actually was finally able to the find the “Online Store”. I had been opening the “App and Sale Channel Settings” where I could not find it. I think as you suggested it only shows in Recommended.

After I added it back I’m not sure if it solved the initial issue but I couldn’t remove it. But I have added a client side redirect from the theme so that the root path, /, redirects to my non-shopify website. I already had a website and that is why I had the “Online Store” disabled. I learned that since June you cannot remove it yourself via Support. So I can’t remove it to see if it solved the problem or not.

I used to add it, edit the theme and then remove it and that made some cases work. The template would stop sending uses to the “Online Store” though but now they are but I have the client side redirect for most of those cases.

It seems that creating an account is hidden behind "Already have an account? link Login /link . After I added the store I don’t use and cannot remove I was able to change the theme language as suggested in another discussion for “Login” and “Already have an account?”.

I changed so customers might understand it to read:

Create Account or Log in: link Account /link

This discussion helped me figure out the shallow work around to this problem:

I also disabled Shop Pay and some of the Wallets. These show up above the Login link and supersede it in a way that doesn’t seem to allow users to check their prior orders. I’m not sure how all these elements are supposed to work together especially if you have a pre-existing website (not via the Online Store machinery). My testing made it appear that using express checkout via Shop Pay wouldn’t let you be able to return in any way to review orders you have made with my shop.
