Dawn: Theme customization but retain update ability

Announced earlier this year it is now possible to auto update, or manually update the Dawn 2.0 theme.

But is it possible to apply customisations to the theme and still retain this ability or will customisations be overwritten?

I am used to downloading and installing a theme, customising it and using it. This effectively is ‘forking’ it for want of a better word. I don’t understand how changes to the source theme would be kept in sync with the fork.

Or is there a better way to customise themes so that future updates can be applied?

Shopify transfers any updates you’ve made via the customizer to the updated theme. But I believe any code changes for any files (snippet/sections etc) will not be transferred.

If you did make code updates, make a log of it on word docs/notepad for the future, so when an update happens, you can easily add it. This does require some effort, so I only recommended to do that if there is a feature you desperately want in the new update.
