Dawn Theme: How to make all my product images square, with a margin and uncropped, like Amazon

Hello everyone!

I would like my product images to have the same square format with margins regarding the real size of the image. Here is an example.

Is this posible? How can I do it?

I’ve seen answers saying it can’t be done and that you have to edit the image itself.
