I’m currently optimizing my Shopify store and tested my product page speed using Google PageSpeed Insights. Sometimes it gives me a score over 90, but other times it drops to around 60, even though I didn’t change anything on the page.

Here’s a screenshot showing the difference in scores:

I’m wondering:

  • What causes this kind of fluctuation?

  • Is it related to Shopify’s infrastructure, apps, or external scripts (like Facebook Pixel)?

  • Is there a recommended way to get a more consistent speed score or testing result?

@Jamespark89 the internet varies, larger sample sizes are needed for more accurate medians.

And goes to show why investing in performance is hard because

So if a site is not very performant massive performance losses can happen with minor disruption.

@Jamespark89 From what I know, the page speed result will vary as Google Page Speed Insights is designed to detect real-time speed result, therefore it is normal to have different results after doing several tests.

On my end, I usually prefer to test several times and get an average result. The device network connection you use to test page speed also matters here, therefore you can also choose to test via different devices and get a better result.

@Jamespark89 From what I know, this tool is designed to test page speed under real-time situation, therefore it is normal to get different speed results after testing several times. On my end I usually prefer to test page speed three or four times, then get an average result to judge my web page performance and optimize accordingly. You can use this method also.

The device network connection you use to test speed also matters here, you can choose to test results on different devices and will get a more precise result meanwhile. Thank you!
