Dawn theme, page templates no displaying in drop down to assign to a new page

I am using the Dawn theme and have created some new page templates, but the don’t appear on the drop down menu to be able to assign them. I would appreciate suggestions.

Alternate templates can only be use from the live published theme.

To view alternate templates in unpublished themes use the ?view= parameter

i.e. /pages/recipes?view=recipes
