Dealing With Discontinued Products Without Affecting SEO

Hi All,

My online store is a seasonal store selling calendars and diaries mainly. We have over 2000 new products every year, and every year, those products become discontinued because off course when the year 2021 finishes no one wants to buy them, so the following year we have another 2000 new products. I’m looking for someone who can tell me the best way to deal with the following because it’s really frustrating to know the right to do:

1- SEO issue: We worked hard on SEO on the website and we are ranking for tons of keywords especially for collections and product pages. Many of those keywords include a year in them, for example, 2022 dog calendars.

Now if people search for Dog calendars we are possibly first up there, so i can’t really delete this collection as then we will lose traffic, same goes for product pages etc.. what is the best way to deal with this without affecting my SEO?

2- On page product visibility issue: Now since i’m thinking I cannot delete old products because they rank well, my visitors are going to see wayyy too many out-of-stock products. I found apps to remove those out of stock products from collection pages, but people still find them in Search results which is annoying.

3- Back ends chaos: Internally I feel it’s going to be really hard that shopify will be showing me all those products in the back end. is there a way to hide those products somehow in the back end too so it’s easier to manage things?

I would love to have professional advice on this or someone who had the same experience.

Thank you
