Delete Translate and adapt and english version - possible outcome

Topic summary

A Shopify store owner with ~5,000 products is considering uninstalling the Translate and Adapt app because their English version generates no traffic in their Spanish-speaking country. They’re concerned that Google is showing English pages in search results instead of Spanish ones.

Main concern: Whether deleting English pages would harm SEO through mass 404 errors, affecting indexing and rankings.

Expert recommendation:

  • Do not delete the English pages, as this will create multiple 404 errors
  • Google may interpret broken pages as non-functional, reducing search ranking potential
  • Root cause investigation needed: Check if Google’s Search Region setting is misconfigured
  • Navigate to Settings > Language & region > Search Region and verify it’s set to the actual country (not “Current Region” default)
  • The “Current Region” setting can override language preferences if Google detects a different location
  • Test whether fixing regional settings resolves the issue before deciding on app removal

Status: Discussion remains open; store owner has not yet confirmed whether they’ll follow the diagnostic approach or proceed with deletion.

Hello, i want to uninstall Translate and adapt app, not really any problem, the app works great. But the english version of my website is not contributing nothing on my country. And some results on google are apearing on the english version (my original language is spanish)

So the question would be, what consecuences would i get from deleting the english pages and getting a lot of 404s? ( my website is arround 5k products)

Could harm seo, indexing or ranks?

How would you do it? Im interested in your opinions.

Now that my web is getting traffic i dont want to mess up!

Thank you sincerely

Hello @vmms24

Please note here at first that deleting the English pages on your website has no good effect on store SEO. It will not only cause multiple 404 error pages, but also let Google think your pages are not working and reduce the possibilities of ranking higher in search results. Here, my suggestion is not to delete the English pages for now, you should dig out the cause code why your English version pages appear on Google when your original language is Spanish.

I know one situation that will cause this issue. You can further check if it is similar to your situation: Please check if the Google setting for Search Region is your actual country, not the default of “Current Region”. If Google thinks you’re in a different country, the “Current Region” setting will often override the Language setting. You can go to Settings > Language & region > Search Region to set your actual country. After changing, you can double check if the results on Google equals your original language or not, then decide if you need to uninstall Translate and Adapt APP still. Thank you!
