Deleting page from google search-data question

Topic summary

A Shopify store owner wants to sell one-of-a-kind products but is concerned about deleted product pages appearing as “page not found” errors in Google search results after items sell, which could harm their reputation.

Two solutions were proposed:

  • 301 redirects: Redirect deleted pages to similar products, collections, or custom pages to preserve SEO and avoid broken links
  • “noindex” tag method: Apply a “noindex” tag before deletion so search engines stop indexing the page, then delete it after a few days once it’s removed from search results

The store owner prefers the “noindex” approach since their products are unique and redirecting to other items wouldn’t be appropriate.

Implementation steps suggested:

  1. First redirect 404 pages to 301 redirects
  2. Add “noindex” tags (requires developer assistance or code editing)
  3. Resubmit sitemap in Google Search Console
  4. Wait for Google to process the changes

The discussion remains open with the store owner planning to implement this solution when needed or seek additional help at that time.

Hi

I want to add products that are just one of a kind and create a page for them but when they are sold I do not want google to show a page not found when searching for the sold products and page that I have deleted. I don’t want to leave the page visible with all products sold as this will damage my reputation and put off potential buyers on my website.

Is there a way I can delete the page so that it is not available to search in search engines?

Thanks

Louise

Hi Louise,

Thanks for your message.

You’ve raised a great point, and there are a couple of ways to manage one-of-a-kind product pages after they’ve sold, without leaving broken links or affecting how your site appears in search results.

Set up a 301 redirect
Instead of deleting the page, we can redirect it to a relevant alternative such as a similar product, a collection, or a custom message page. This prevents “page not found” errors and helps maintain your site’s SEO.

Add a “noindex” tag before deletion
If you’d prefer to remove the page entirely, we can first apply a “noindex” tag so that search engines exclude it from search results. Once it’s no longer indexed (usually within a few days), the page can be safely deleted.

Thankyou it is likely that the products will be individual and I would not want to send customers to another product so “noindex” sounds better. How do I apply the “noindex” is that complicated?

Thankyou

Hi @Lou1970

It seems like you would like not to let Google display your deleted sold-out product pages. If so, you need to redirect them from 404 error pages to 301 pages at first. After that, add no-index tags from code pages with the help of developers and let Google know your changes by submitting sitemaps again in Google Search Console. Then you need to wait and give Google some time until you fail to find them in search results. This should work on your store, please kindly have a try, thank you!

Hi

Thankyou when the times comes I will find out what I need to do or ask someone to help me. Great response.
