Hi everyone! I’m hoping to get some clarification from other merchants.
I recently migrated my business POS to Shopify and during the sales/onboarding process I was told by the sales representative that Shopify did not charge transaction fees related to gift cards.
After completing the migration and importing gift card balances dating back to 2018, I’ve since learned that transaction fees apply when gift cards are used as payment for stores created after May 12, 2025.
This came as a surprise to me and has a financial impact since some of those balances were issued long before I moved to Shopify.
I did reach out to Shopify support and they reviewed my account, but they confirmed that transaction fees will still apply under the current policy.
I’m curious if other merchants who migrated recently had a similar understanding during onboarding, or if anyone has found a way to manage gift card transactions differently within Shopify POS.
I really like the platform and I’m just trying to understand if others are in the same situation.
