Difference between bundles created with mutation and function

I was wondering what are the differences between bundles created with productVariantRelationshipBulkUpdate mutation and bundle created using function?
Would be really grateful to get an answer.

It seems the main difference between the two are that bundles created via a function use metafield definitions to store bundle components, whereas bundles created with the productVariantRelationshipBulkUpdate mutation don’t.
