Different shipping costs for different variant

Hi all,

Can anyone go through how to apply different shipping costs to a product with different variants. I’ve looked but can’t find a solution but am sure it can be done. Thanks.

Hi, @Matchbloc !

Mac from Shopify here! Thanks for posting this question. Currently, there are a few methods in which this feature can be implemented, and I’m happy to share some more details on this with you.

You can use custom shipping profiles to create shipping rates based on products, location, or a combination of the two. In this case, we’re looking to create a product based shipping profile that only features the selected variants from the product. When you add a product to the custom profile, it is automatically removed from the general shipping profile, so you don’t have to worry about having the product on multiple profiles. Essentially, you will set up multiple profiles with the desired variants to control the shipping cost you would like to charge. If this interests you, feel free to check out our help document here which shows you how to create a shipping profile.

Alternatively, a commonly used method to achieve variant-specific shipping rates would be through the Better Shipping or Bespoke Shipping apps on our App Store. They offer another solution to add this functionality to your store, allowing you to set shipping rates that suit your business, and to set individual shipping rates for each product or variant in your store.

Can you tell me a little bit about why you’re hoping to charge different shipping rates per variant? Have you thought about making the price a core component of your shipping strategy? This will allow you to offer free shipping, all while maintaining profits. To learn more about this, please visit our Shopify Blog here.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Mac, I’ve tried the exact thing that you mentioned in your answer, but it seems that I’m now blocked from creating a profile that only includes select variants of a product (see screen shot). Is there something I’m missing?

Hi, @Matchbloc !

Thanks for joining the thread.

This issue is common when you assign a variant to a group that you already assigned a profile to. Sometimes, merchants prefer to group products and variants to different profiles and rates. I’ve seen reports of this error being fixed by setting up all of your profiles without adding variants to them, and then saving them with no products assigned. Then, you would go back through and add the variants to each profile.

If this doesn’t solve the error, we’ll need to access your account in order to gather more information about the issue. While we’re not able to provide account-specific support via Community Forums at this time, we’d be happy to continue assisting you through live chat, email, or callback. Please visit our Help Center and log in to your account to create a support request.

I’d love to know more about your shipping plan to get a better understanding of your situation. Kindly reply back to this thread with any questions or updates and we can continue our conversation further!

Hello there! I have a similar need, as I would like to assign different variants to different profiles. To explain my reasoning; we currently offer specialty food items that are available in smaller sized “Retail” packaging, as well as larger “Bulk” packaging. Since our retail packaging offers a wider profit margin, it affords us the opportunity to occasionally offer special freight promotions and discounts (We do not like to discount our products and prefer to discount the freight). The Bulk items are offered at competitively low price points that will require higher minimum purchase amounts to qualify for free or discounted freight, Ideally, we would find an app that would 1) allow assignment of shipping profile by variant, as well as 2) allow an option for free or discounted freight based on the number/quantity of items purchased from any one profile. Example; promo: “Purchase 4 or more of our XXX products and receive free freight” (and place all those items in one profile). Then the quantity rule would run for all items in one profile and offer the promo when applicable.
Than you for any guidance!

Hi @DeezNuts ,

You achieve this with the PH MultiCarrier Shipping Label app. It allows you to create shipping profiles & set shipping conditions based on product quantity, category, weight, and zones.
