I’ve been so far unable to get the Download link to appear on the order confirmation page after a purchase is made. I’m using the Shopify Digital downloads app and following these steps.
I’ve got the Digital Downloads app → Settings → Checkout → Activated, but still don’t get the download link button after the order has been made as shown in the steps above.
I’m in the developer plan atm so wondering if I need to sign up for a plan to get it.
I’m the owner of Sky Pilot, another digital download app. We have these kind of issues when the store is password protected, maybe that’s the reason for you as well?
Hello, I am having the same issue. My site is published and not password protected. I have made sure to go to Apps → click Digital Downloads → click settings in the app → and made sure that the download now link is “activated” in the check out section. I still don’t see any download now link after running a test of purchasing the product.
I’m having the exact same issue as you. Under Digital Downloads > Settings > Checkout is ‘activated’. Yet upon a successful digital download purchase nothing is displayed on the confirmation page allowing customer to download. Only an email is sent.
After wasting 30 minutes with support their conclusion was: “Since we are already done with the troubleshooting steps and nothing has happened, we will need to escalate this to the technical team, so they will be the one who will fix the issue.”
I’m not holding my breath, but should any meaningful fix be offered I’ll be sure to update you all here.
"We’re reaching out to address your concern regarding the download link not being visible on the Order Status/Thank You page.
We understand how important it is for you to ensure that the link is readily available for your customers to download their purchased digital goods immediately after completing their checkout, so they won’t have to wait for an email to be sent. Therefore, we have taken a closer look at this issue to determine its cause. Upon further investigation, we have identified this as a known issue that our developers are currently investigating.
They have made significant progress in identifying the root causes that could affect the visibility of the download link on those pages. The factors affecting this issue are as follows:
Thank You and Order Status pages, which are still within Checkout, were upgraded to the latest version.
Digital Downloads app was installed after April 2024.
I see that your shop is already on the latest checkout version and installed the app in May. This explains why you are impacted by this issue.
Please rest assured that our developers are actively working on a fix to resolve this issue and have provided additional steps that will need to be taken once the fix is implemented. Although we cannot provide a specific timeframe for when the resolution will be available, we will ensure it is rolled out across the platform as soon as it is thoroughly tested.
We will keep you updated on any new information we receive. In the meantime, please utilize the email notifications sent to your customers upon purchasing digital goods so they can access the download link. Thank you."
Really appreciate you sharing this information! I ran into this issue as I was running a test of a digital download purchase. Issue still exists on 11/21.
They’re still working on this. I received the following update today (9/12/2024):
“I am following up regarding this matter to keep you updated on our progress. Our developers are currently exploring the best approach to resolve this issue, and the process is taking a bit longer due to the nature of the problem and its underlying causes.
We are actively monitoring new reports and additional observations related to the issue to ensure we gain a comprehensive understanding. I will send another email as soon as we have more information or updates available. Should you have any new findings regarding the behavior of the issue, then please don’t hesitate to let us know.”
Hi, the staff member informed me that they need to close the chat and will no longer be updating me personally. However, they said "Our developers are still actively trying to fix it, and we’re making progress. To help keep things organized, I will be closing this ticket for now. But don’t worry—once the fix is ready, it will automatically be applied to your store and all others affected."
Because of this, I will test the download functionality every month and post on here as soon as I detect a fix! I have scheduled an endlessly recurring event on my diary to make sure this will be done. If anyone else detects a fix, please share here.
Let’s be patient. Thankfully, customers will receive download links by email in the mean time, so feel free to use the app as usual.
Hi, it’s January 23, 2025 and I have the EXACT same issue. To reiterate what all the users have been saying:
I’ve got the Digital Downloads app → Settings → Checkout → Activated, but still don’t get the download link button after the order has been made as shown in the steps above.
The last I heard was: 'Ourdevelopers are still actively trying to fix it, and we’re making progress.’ That was 18th December 2024. I am doing monthly checks and will report on here once they’ve fixed the issue. Still not there yet though.
For now, here are 3 alternatives:
Use a FREE app: I just came across a free app called Digital Download Pendora that allows you to add download links to the order confirmation/thank you page as well as email! It has a 500MB limit on the account - but that’s no problem: You can create files from links! This means, when they click download, they can be taken to your Shopify file’s link (or a link to other cloud services)! Plus, the support team say if you need more space you can contact the team and they may be able to sort something out for you.
Use a paid app. This one (for example) starts with a free plan allowing 50 free orders per month with up to 5GB storage space and charges $0.10 per order after that. Paid plans start at $7.99/month and go up to $24.99/month.
Stick to Shopify’s digital downloads app with email links only. Email links aren’t bad. Make it clear on your product pages and wait until Shopify fixes the issue.
HERE ARE MY BEST 3 SOLUTIONS WHILE SHOPIFY ARE ACTIVELY WORKING ON A FIX FOR THIS ISSUE:

It has a 500MB limit on the account - but that’s no problem: You can create files from links within the app! This means, when customers click ‘Download’, they can be taken to your Shopify file’s direct download link (or a link to other cloud services)! Plus, the support team say if you need more space you can contact the team and they may be able to sort something out for you.

Thank you for this information. I just tried the Pendora and it was very simple! My only question is this - does the buyer now get 2 emails? One from Shopify confirming the order and then another from Pendora with the link to download?
I found a solution that worked for me. Here are the steps I followed:
Go to Admin page > Apps > Digital Downloads > Settings > Click “Customize” on the Checkout area > Click “Customize” button on Configurations area > Click Apps on the top left menu > Click “+” button to add “Order status” and “Thank you” pages for digital download app > Save
Now you must be setup the download links to the order pages!
