Merchants selling digital products are frustrated by Shopify’s mandatory billing address requirement at checkout, which they view as a significant conversion barrier. The original poster is considering switching platforms despite preferring Shopify.
Key concerns raised:
Collecting physical addresses for email-delivered digital goods creates unnecessary friction
Competitors like Stripe and Mollie don’t require billing addresses for payment processing
May violate European Data Protection Regulations by collecting unnecessary personal information
Shopify’s position (via community response):
Billing addresses are needed for credit card verification and fraud detection
This applies even though Shopify Payments runs on Stripe infrastructure
Current status:
No workaround exists besides upgrading to Shopify Plus
Multiple merchants report this has been a long-standing request without resolution
The discussion remains unresolved with merchants expressing strong dissatisfaction

I sell digital goods and I cannot for the life of me get rid of the billing address. I love Shopify but I’m willing to switch to something I don’t like as much. The fact that people have to input a home adress for something that they receive per email is a conversion killer for me.
Reading through most of the threads I see that Shopify has been nagged for years to make this possible without result. Beside switching to Shopify plus, are there any hacks to achieve this result? I really hope I don’t want to switch but I’m being forced to…
The reason Shopify won’t let you disable the billing address is even with digital goods customers still need to pay for the goods requiring a billing address to verify their credit card. This is also important for determining fraud too. Now, if these are free digital goods, that might be different.
As far as the email address and conversions, I don’t think this will affect your conversion as customers are used to having to input their email to get confirmation emails, etc. I’m not sure how these digital goods are delivered to the customer but without an email, how are customers getting them once they place an order?
Sorry, that was a typo, edited my initial post. My complaint is solely about having to input a physical address. Email is necessary of course.
I’m not buying the fraud detection and mandatory billing adress though. Stripe doesn’t need it, nor does Mollie for example.. I’ve bought enough stuff online to tell you that it’s not necessary but rather a choice.
but I believe in Europe, this is likely a breach of the Data Protection Regulations as you aren’t allowed to collect personal data you do not require. And as you don’t need a billing address for payment or legal compliance with free digital items, it’s surely a breach.
YES! This! It impacts conversion like a mf! Also I don’t even want the ask for the address as it is not necessary at all for digital goods and I’m being forced to ask for PII! Shopify, for digital goods, it is NOT necessary toa sk for billing address. Please stop forcing us to ASAP!
Same story here. Shopify is making up that billing address is necessary, but it’s not. Even Shopify payments are powered by Stripe…essentially they are Stripe, but this access to less information. Stripe allows payments WITHOUT billing address. Yet, Shopify does not care about it’s client’s conversions.
