Disable "Turn to Customer for Receipt Selection"

Topic summary

A new mandatory “Turn to Customer for Receipt Selection” screen was automatically enabled in Shopify POS, adding an extra step to the checkout process. This frustrated merchants running high-volume retail stores where transaction speed is critical—one user reported processing 369 transactions in 6 hours.

Solution Found:

  • Navigate to Shopify Admin → Settings → Point of Sale tab
  • Select “Customer receipt selection” and toggle it off
  • Reboot the POS app for changes to take effect
  • Multiple users confirmed this successfully removes the unwanted screen

Key Complaints:

  • Feature was automatically opted-in without merchant notification or consent
  • No advance warning, changelog entry, or help documentation provided
  • Timing of rollout disrupted active business operations
  • Adds unnecessary friction to already slower POS workflows
  • Designed without consideration for busy retail environments

Merchants emphasized the need for opt-in features rather than forced automatic updates, and recommended contacting Shopify Support directly to report dissatisfaction with such rollout practices.

A meta issue here is no version freezing, or informed opt-in.

This is the type of thing merchants need to make feature requests, and report dissatisfaction, about by contacting shopify support directly

Not whether a change will be made because shopify will do what shopify does but merchants are forced to it in AND in the middle of a business week.

Which is so laughably bizarre, it’s like when they force change the admin/dashboards the week of black friday.

Shopify push changes to time sensitive processes and make merchants be automatically opted-into it completely uninformed.

Lack of: proper forewarning, pinned forum comment or announcement thread , or a help link in the UI itself, this isn’t even showing in the changelog.

To be fair shopify’s feature announcements and onboarding have massively improved over the years but these types of rollouts undo that hard earned goodwill so fast.
