I have created a discount code using the basic shopify options to give to those who subscribe to our newsletter. I have it set for ‘email subscribers only’, however upon testing it, I have discovered that the code is active and functioning despite not signing up to the newsletter or entering any personal details whatsoever.
Is this a glitch in shopify, or is there a workaround? - Any help would be appreciated.
When you created the discount for your email subscribers, did you make an automatic discount or a discount code? If you would like to create a discount that can only be used by your email subscribers, we will need to make sure that the Customer eligibility is set to only allow email subscribers to use the code. I took a screenshot from my test store to show you the sections I am referring to:
This should then allow only your email subscribers to use the discount code created. When you tested the discount code, did you test it using an incognito browser? If you are attempting to test the discount code using the Shopify admin, the code will allow you to use it.
Thanks for getting back to me. It is indeed a discount code (not an automatic one) and the customer group is set to email subscribers which is confirmed on the right hand side (see attached word document). When I tested the code I used an incognito browser in Chrome, and a private window in Safari and both apply the code without any signing in / creating an account or anything, so I 'm completely at a loss as to what has been overlooked?
That is a bit odd if you are able to use the discount code using an incognito browser, as this should allow you to have a customers view. I would suggest attempting to reach out to a Support Advisor to take a closer look into why the discount code can still be used. Since we cannot authenticate you for the store in question using our public forums, it would be best to have you login to the store using our Contact Us page. This will allow us to verify you as the store owner before discussing the internal information.
Thank you for getting in touch. Have you made sure that your discount code is assigned to the email subscribers group only? When editing the discount, in the “Customer eligibility” section you can select “Specific customer segments” and select email subscribers as the group.

Were you ever able to get this working? I’m having the same problem. The specific segment “email subscribers” does nothing to restrict people from using a coupon code. Also tested using incognito chrome.
Hi there, @HersheySquirt . Thanks for taking the time to follow up on this thread regarding discounts! When you created this discount and added the ‘Email subscriber’ customer segment, did you make sure the segment accurately represented your subscribed customers? If you click on the customer segement within the discounts settings, you can see specifically what segment is being represented, and what customers, and the percentage of customers you have, that fit into this segment.

I can use my discount code with an incognito browser even with it setup to allow only a specific customer segment. This scenario should deny the discount code.
Hi again, @HersheySquirt . To be clear, you’re entering in the code at checkout while you’re in an incognito browser, and not using an email that is registered as a pre-existing customer in your store that is subscribed to emails? I do recommend that you follow the link I provided you in my last reply so you can connect with our Authenticated Team so we can access your store and replicate these actions.
I’m not using any email anywhere in the checkout. I’m not going to explain it again, because I think the problem is pretty clear. I’m already chatting with support.
I apologize for any misunderstanding I had around your question, @HersheySquirt . I appreciate your patience while working with me so I could better understand what was occurring. If you’re currently connect with our authenticated team via chat, I’m sure they’ll be able to get an understanding around what is occurring and provide you with some assistance with troubleshooting.
When you test the discount code using an incognito window you still need to enter a valid email address in the checkout. Without a valid email address, the discount code will show that it is applied, but once you give it an email address that isn’t in your list of email subscribers it will reject the code. I hope this helps. I had the same problem and worked with support to figure this out.
