Display tags on product page with link to relevant collection page

Topic summary

A user working with the Canopy theme wants to display product tags as clickable buttons or labels on product pages, with links to corresponding collection pages. They currently use a metafield called “features” but prefer the button/label styling shown in their reference screenshot.

Current Status:

  • The user knows how to add tags in Shopify’s backend but needs help implementing the display functionality
  • Another participant confirms this requires custom code editing (HTML + CSS)
  • One user offers to help via collaborator access to work on a duplicate theme

Alternative Solution Offered:

  • A developer introduces their app that displays product tags on pages and automatically creates hidden collections for SEO benefits
  • The app generates structured URLs (e.g., collections/scottish-prints/edinburgh) that reportedly perform well in Google search
  • An upcoming update will add tag display in collection pages
  • The developer seeks feedback and is cautious about sharing the app store link publicly

Resolution: The discussion remains open with potential solutions offered but not yet implemented.

How would one display tags on a product page and have them link to a collection page? I’d also like for them to be displayed as buttons or labels, instead of line text with commas in between.

I am currently working on designing the Canopy theme. Here’s a link to a product page: https://4w53kow7idbm91r6-67010658589.shopifypreview.com . Ideally these tags would replace the metafield “features”.

An example of what I’m after:

@claire_borchard on which page do you have these tags?

These tags will be displayed on the product page.

@claire_borchard can you please name a product? I checked few and could not find it

Sorry about that! I just realized the link didn’t actually specify a product page. Please look for Cupcakes White Cosmos.

I don’t see any solutions?

@claire_borchard - there will be an option to add tags to a product from product back end, have you tried that option?

I know how to add tags to the items, but I don’t know how to get them to display on the product page, or as buttons / labels.

@claire_borchard once you add tags then code needs to be edited to show these tags at the place you want, it will need code editing + css

Right. Do you know how to do that? I’ve seen code for displaying tags on the product pages, but I haven’t seen any coding for changing the text to a button style.

Alternatively, I thought about just changing the metafield “features” to display as labels / buttons, but I haven’t found code for that either.

@claire_borchard - if you can provide me the collab access? I can duplicate theme and try it, so any changes will not affect live theme and then we can make it live if everything works

Hey folks, just been doing a bit of research on here as we have just launched a new app that displays product tags live on apps. The really cool bit is it also creates hidden collections of those tags that are great for SEO. We also have an update coming out in a few weeks that will show the tags in collections. I’ve got a rough version of this update own my own Shopify site (selling Scottish art) and the results with google are amazing as it creates really cool URL’s. An example would be if a collection url was collections/scottish-prints and a product in this collections was tagged Edinburgh (for example) the URL would then be collections/scottish-prints/edinburgh and google is certainly loving these URL’s. I’m not sure if I would be allowed to post the link to the app on the app store on here as I am quite new to all this and don’t want to rock the boat - so if anyone knows If I can post the link then great or I’m guessing I could DM you with it. Only if you are interested in having a look of course  (we are also really interested in getting feedback/suggestions as this is the first version of the app).
