Displaying variant metafields which link to another product

Hello,

I am new to shopify so apologies if this is an easy question, I have tried looking around but can’t seem to find a method that will do what I would like.

Basically I have a store which has loads of different pairs of sunglasses on, some of these sunglasses share the same design but have a different colour. What I would like to do is on the collection page show only 1 pair of the glasses from each style, but have variation swatches for the different colours. Then when you click into the product also show the variations for the different colours in there.

Any help is appreciated,

I do not want the swatches to just be a variation of the same product, I need this to link to an entirely separate product. I have found videos online, but all they seem to show is how to add variations to a product, which only keeps it as one product.
