Do archived products slow down your store?

Topic summary

Main issue: whether keeping many archived products impacts Shopify store speed.

  • Multiple merchants asked if archived products contribute to slowness, with some hesitant to delete them for potential future restocks.
  • One participant notes their theme compresses images, narrowing possible causes to either a single extension or the volume of archived products.

Recent update/action:

  • A merchant reports exporting all archived products, deleting them, and observing an apparent speed improvement afterward. They suggest this as a reversible test, since the products can be re-imported if needed.

Evidence and balance:

  • The reported improvement is anecdotal; no benchmark data, technical explanation, or confirmation from Shopify staff is provided.
  • No counterexamples or definitive statements proving archived products cause slowness appear in the discussion.

Status:

  • Unresolved. The thread lacks authoritative guidance or consensus. A practical workaround is to export, delete archived items, test performance, and re-import if necessary if no improvement is seen.

Hi, I was wondering if archived products slow down the store? I have nearly 300 archived products. I like to keep track of it, go back if needed, etc… Thanks.

I have the same question and was wondering if anyone can answer? Is it better to just delete all archived products? Thx

Over 2 years after the original question and 5 months since the last reply, I also have the same question. Research tells me my Shopify theme will compress images, so the only ideas I have left for why my store is slowing down is the one extension I’m using or the several archived products I have.

Has anyone experimented with removing archived products to see if that speeds up their site? I’m hesitant to run the experiment because I don’t want to lose those products. I’d rather not delete products that I might restock and sell again.

I just exported all my archived products and then deleted them from my store. It appears to have increased the speed of my store!

I think its worth a shot. Worst case scenario you just import the file back into shopify
