I am trying to determine if visitors to our site shop by product category or by product type.
e.g. We have a “collection” named “Orchid” that has vases in the collection.
Does a visitor to our site tend to go to the Orchid collection and buy the “Orchid Vase” or to the Vases category to buy the “Orchid Vase”?
I have Clarify heatmap installed, but I have not found a way to tease out this info.
Is there a way to get the click count of menu items to compare the menu items “Orchid Collection” vs. “Vases”?
Does anyone know how to get this sort of info?
Hi, David!
Paul here. I can see why you’re interested in this particular topic. You can offer better exposure on the Home Page to the Product Category of Product Type based on that, for example.
First, I would say you’re interested in how Collections perform versus Product Category. Now, the answer will be different from store to store. In short, I suggest you go for the Product Category as people tend to shop based on their needs rather than the collections you publish. It is easier to shop for all vases if you’re looking for one, rather than shopping for a specific collection.
However, since you’re a Shopify Plus merchant, you don’t want to go for the general approach. You’re looking for a tailored solution. Therefore, I recommend a mix of Google Analytics and Lucky Orange to inspect people’s behaviour and their clicks.
If you haven’t already, integrating Google Analytics with your Shopify store can be incredibly insightful. You can set up specific events or goals to track the clicks on different menu items like “Orchid Collection” and “Vases.” This will give you a clearer picture of the customer journey on your site. Same for Lucky Orange.
If you need help, you can reply here or send a DM. I would love to help.
Thanks,
Paul
Thanks!
I agree that shopping by category is probably more popular. I am just trying to prove it.
Google Analytics is setup and I am investigating Lucky Orange.
I could setup “events” or “goals”, but that would need time to accumulate data and I wanted to go back in time not forward.
It’s hard to look back and see which one performed better if no event or goal has been set up. I recommend collecting data as soon as possible and maybe running an A/B test to see which one performs better.
The A/B testing can be short (1 week) and might give you the answer faster than other methods.
