Do you give your affiliates free samples or PR boxes?

Hi Community,

With BFCM on the horizon, PR boxes can be a great way to spark authentic unboxing or try-on content from micro-influencers. The broad steps usually include:

  • Build your PR list
  • Send invite emails
  • Arrange the logistics
  • Prepare the gifts (handwritten note, business cards, free products)
  • Ship them out

The tricky part often comes at the logistics stage, especially when influencers want to choose their own products. Shopify Collab can help streamline that process. Another option some stores use is UpPromote, which not only allows you to set a range of products for influencers but also lets them select their gifts independently - making the whole workflow smoother.

I’m curious - have you tried sending PR boxes before? What did you include, what kind of results did you see, and are there any other tools or methods you’d recommend?

Thanks in advance for sharing your insights!

Hi @namphan ,

Yes, I’ve tried PR boxes before and they can be a really effective way to generate authentic content if planned carefully. From my experience, a few things made the difference:

  • Personalization: Adding small touches like a handwritten thank-you note or a card explaining why we chose that influencer really helped strengthen the relationship.

  • Product choice: Letting influencers pick their preferred items (using a tool like Collabs or a simple Google Form) reduced wasted stock and increased the chance they’d actually use and share the product.

  • Packaging: We treated the box as part of the brand story—branded tissue, eco-friendly filler, and sometimes a small surprise gift (like samples or accessories). The “wow” factor often showed up in their unboxing videos.

  • Follow-up: Instead of just shipping and waiting, we followed up with a friendly check-in. Sometimes that gentle nudge was what got the content posted.

In terms of results, micro-influencers tend to drive higher engagement than mega ones, and we also noticed a nice bump in user-generated content we could repost on our channels.

For tools, apart from Shopify Collabs and UpPromote, I’ve seen brands use platforms like AspireIQ or even Airtable to manage influencer lists, preferences, and shipment tracking.

Curious to see how others are handling the logistics—especially during the BFCM rush when timelines are tight. :rocket:

We’ve experimented with PR boxes a few times, and one thing that consistently worked better for us was giving creators some level of choice rather than sending the exact same package to everyone.

When influencers can pick products that genuinely match their style, size, or audience, the resulting content tends to feel much more authentic. It also reduces the back-and-forth around exchanges and sizing issues.

As for results, we didn’t always see immediate sales directly attributable to the PR boxes, but we did see a noticeable increase in UGC, social proof, and content that could later be repurposed for ads, product pages, and social media. In some cases, the long-term value of the content ended up being greater than the initial sales generated.

One lesson we learned is that the unboxing experience matters more than many merchants expect. A handwritten note, thoughtful packaging, and a clear brand story often generated more engagement than simply adding extra free products.

For micro-influencers specifically, I’d rather send 20 carefully targeted PR boxes than 100 generic ones. Relevance usually outperforms reach.

Curious to hear from others as well—have you found PR boxes to be more effective for direct sales, content creation, brand awareness, or something else entirely?
