What are your experiences with back up aps and the need for them?
Have just migrated to Shopify. Do users recommend subscribing to a back up ap service or is it unnecessary?
Hello @Jim_Fisher
I would like to give you the recommendation to support you
Regarding your concern, you can refer this article : https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/shopify-admin/duplicate-store
It will guide you to backup your store.
I hope the above is useful to you.
Best regards,
GemPages Support Team.
Hi Jim:
I’m the CEO at Rewind. I helped build the first backup app for Shopify in 2015, so this is something I know quite a bit about.
The question of “do I need them” is yes - you do need a backup. Shopify has a backup of everyone’s store, and they’ll use that if the entire Shopify system has a problem. But, if your store has a problem (and not the whole system) that backup isn’t useful to you. You can’t call Shopify support and ask them to restore the few items that you need. As a result, if your store has an issue (3rd party app causes a problem, you make a mistake or a CSV upload goes back for example) you need a backup to restore back to.
The only good way to make that backup is through a backup app. One of the main problems with the solution posted by “GemPages” is that the product export CSV file doesn’t create copies of your images, so if a product is deleted, and you restore using an export, the images won’t come back. You don’t have that problem with a backup app. (It’s also very time consuming to run the backup every week, and as soon as you make a change the backup is out of date. Backup apps automate that.)
I think the real question you have is “Are the backup apps worth the money”. That’s a question only you can answer. A few things to think about when trying to decide: how valuable is your time, what would downtime on your store cost you, what’s your brand reputation worth? If your store is new and has few or 0 orders, and you’re just getting started, then maybe you’re happy taking the risk of losing everything and having to rebuild.
If you’re a Shopify Plus store with thousands of orders per month, and downtime would cost you thousands, tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of dollars, not to mention the damage to your brand, then it’s probably a different story. It’s all up to how much risk you’re comfortable with, how long it would take you to rebuild your store from scratch (always best to assume the whole store is gone).
The other benefit of a backup app is that it allows you to more freely make changes to your store, modifying things more quickly and testing new things. After all, you can simply restore to a backup if something goes wrong.
Let me know if you have any other questions. You can find the list of backup apps in the App Store. Rewind is the top rated and first backup app in the App Store, and I think it’s the best, but I’m obviously biased. ![]()
