Does living in China affect US sales tax for my e-commerce store?

I am a US citizen. I live in China. I have lived here for 13 years. I am opening an E-commerce store through shopify. The products are designed for US domestic consumption only. In the Printify store, where I set up the products, I have used my US bank card which is connected to my sister’s address in Missouri. I have no physical presence in the US.

I looked into getting a sales tax permit in Missouri, but I stopped. The process asked a lot about my location. I have no location in Missouri, of course.

I am not sure how to proceed, or even if I need to since China does not have sales tax. My physical location has no sales tax, and I have no physical location in the US. However, my products will be sold in the US. Is there anyone out there who can help clarify what needs to be done?

Thanks.

Dave

Hi, @daveascoli .

Whether or not you’ll need to charge sales taxes on your store will depend on several different factors, such as location and business circumstance. Due to this, and because tax laws and regulations can often change, you’ll need to consult with a tax authority so that they can help you with this situation. They’ll also be able to ensure that you’re filing and remitting your taxes correctly.

Although our Shopify Support team aren’t tax experts and therefore can’t provide tax advice, we do have some guides available that you can read to get you started and help answer some of your preliminary tax questions. Feel free to take a closer look at them below:
