Etsy has a vacation mode that lets stores pause while they are away and Ebay also has something called time away mode. Both of them are great because they just notify customers with little messages and you can choose if you want to keep selling or pause sales entirely. Is there a way to do this on Shopify ideally without like an expensive app or something?
Hey @themeguy
Shopify doesn’t have a built in vacation mode like Etsy or eBay, but you can recreate it close enough without paying for an app.
If you want to pause sales completely, the easiest way is Online Store > Preferences > turn on password protection. Lets you set a custom message (“We’re away until [date], orders will resume [date]”) and blocks anyone from checking out. Free, takes 30 seconds. Downside is it blocks search engines and existing customers checking past orders too.
If you want to keep the store browsable but stop new orders, skip the password and instead add a clear announcement bar (most themes have one built in under the theme customizer) saying when orders will resume, then either set products to draft via bulk edit, or set inventory to zero with “continue selling when out of stock” turned off. When you’re back, reverse it. SEO stays intact and customers can still browse and sign up for email.
Cheers,
Moeed
@themeguy .. With SEO and User flow Empact, manage small update from your end.. without any app ( if you have little but dev skills )
1- Quick Notification / announcement bar " like will accept the order after 24 hours "
2- disabled the Check-out internally from store
3- Set inventory ZERO
Etsy and eBay are marketplaces, so they control the entire buying experience. Shopify is different - you’re running your own standalone store. It’s your own website. If you want to go on vacation, go. There are many many options to hide/disable products, buy buttons, cart logic, sections, pages, navigation, etc. You can even cancel plan and resume whenever you want. Pretty sure when you cancel you have a “Pause and build” reason.
Hello @themeguy
Shopify doesn’t have a vacation mode quite like Etsy or eBay, but you can replicate it without using an app. Many sellers simply put sales on hold by disabling checkout with password protection, hiding buy buttons, or temporarily setting products as drafts. If you’d still like to continue selling, put in an announcement bar with your away dates and longer dispatch times and update your shipping estimates in your checkout settings. While traveling, you can also stop ads and use email autoresponders. It requires a bit of work, but it’s great once you have it set up.
Password protection blocks search engines from indexing your store, which hurts your SEO long-term. So never enable password protection unless you need to hide content.
If you need to pause orders, I’d recommend:
- Adding an announcement bar with the dates you’ll be back.
- Using an order limits app to block checkout and prevent accidental orders.
Your site stays visible in search, and customers can’t accidentally place an order while you’re away.
