Does shopify process credit card payments

Do I need a 3rd party processor, or can Shopify process credit cards on my website?

Hi, @Delco42 .

Thanks for reaching out to the Shopify Community.

Shopify supports two different types of credit card payment providers, direct providers and external providers. If you’re using a direct provider, your customers can complete their purchases directly on your online store without having to pay at a third-party checkout. If you’re using an external provider, your customers must complete their purchases on a checkout page that’s hosted outside of your online store.

With that being said, if Shopify Payments is available to you, you can eliminate integrating a third-party payment gateway. When using Shopify Payments, you’re automatically set up to accept all major payment methods as soon as you create your store.

Below, I’ll share some of the benefits of using Shopify Payments:

  • You’re not charged third-party transaction fees for orders that are processed through Shopify Payments, Shop Pay, Shop Pay Installments, and Paypal Express.

  • You’re not charged transaction fees on manual payment methods such as cash, cash on delivery (COD), and bank transfers.

  • Access to Shop Pay

  • Increased conversion rates by accepting all major credit cards and adding accelerated payment methods like Shop Pay, Apple Pay, and Google Pay.

  • There are no additional monthly fees, hidden fees, or setup fees.

I recommend reviewing our Supported Countries for Shopify Payments resource for more information.

Additionally, if you’re not using Shopify Payments you can look into configuring a third-party payment gateway. We’ve included over 100 third-party payment providers so you can accept payments on your store. You can use our resource to search by country or region to see which payment providers are available to you.

Lastly, I’d love to hear more about what kind of business you’re starting online. While you’re getting started, check out our Intro to Shopify resource as it gives a detailed overview of the platform, more information on our pricing and plans and how to get started with selling.

I hope this helps!
