I am new to shopify and I am struggling with setting two separate fields for my customers to enter discount codes and gift cards.
I want customers to use the discount code at checkout and use their gift cards to pay for their cart. At the moment, my shopify checkout has only one field “Add a discount code or gift card” (picture below).
This is Moira from the Social Care team at Shopify. Thanks for posting, and a very warm welcome to the Community.
I understand you are wanting your customers to be able to apply discount codes in conjunction with a gift card. I’d be more than happy to help you out with this today!
I tested this out on my end, and I do see that there is only one field for both in the checkout (Gift card or discount code). However, I can confirm that it is definitely possible to enter both as long as you enter the gift card first and the discount code second. See below for example:
As long as you have active gift cards & discount codes available in your store, you will have the option to enter both in the one field at checkout. From the screenshot you have shared, I can see the field says “gift card or discount code” which means you do indeed have both active. I suggest testing this out yourself then let me know how you get on.
How to use discounts to grow your business
Because you’re using discounts at the moment, I thought you may find our blog post on 19 ways to use discounts handy. This blog post will give you an idea of what might be the best strategy for the discounts you offer, as this can differ depending on the products you sell. It also shows many different options for presenting these offers, such as an abandoned cart or customer loyalty offers.
We were running in to the same issue, of people not being able to apply discount codes and a gift card code to the same order, so I’m happy to see that we can do both if applying the gift card code first.
However, I’m wondering how to fix the issue when we have a discount code active on the site (for example, having an automatic discount code on the entire site for a Labor Day sale, etc). When we have this automatic discount code active on the site, our customers are unable to enter their gift cards - and instead receive an error message stating that “two discount codes cannot be applied”. Is there a solution for this? Thanks!
Hi, is it also possible for customers to enter multiple gift card codes in one purchase transaction? For example, a customer’s order is amounting to total of $25, and he/she has 2 separate gift cards of $10. Can they use those two $10-gift cards in that single order?
I can confirm that there isn’t a hard limit on the number of gift cards that can be applied to a particular order, meaning your customers will be able to apply more than one gift card at the checkout. More info can be found here!
We have quite the opposite requirement in this case. We don’t want the customers to use the Gift Card and discount code at the same time on the Checkout.
I have tested both the Manual Discount Code and Automatic Discount Code and a Gift Card on the checkout and I was able to apply both in any sequence.
Let me know if you can help or suggest anything here.
Currently, the admin allows customers to use a gift card and a discount code at the same time. This is because Shopify treats gift cards as a form of payment rather than a discount. Therefore, it’s not possible to restrict the usage of both at the same time natively within Shopify.
You could consider using a third-party app that allows you to customize the discount rules. Apps such as Stackable, Discount Ninja, or Ultimate Special Offers might help you set up more complex discount rules and restrictions.
