I want to enquire whether using a third party payment gateway incurs additional fees? I have read that its dependent on the plan and varies between 0.5% and 2%. Is this new? I have been using Shopify and an external payment gateway and I have never been charged before.

I’m happy to share some information about this. As laid out on our pricing page, there will be transaction fees if you’re not using Shopify Payments (aka, using a third-party payment gateway). The fees range from 0.5% to 2.0% based on what Shopify plan you’re on.
I dug around our resources and found that transaction fees have been charged on third party payment gateways for a while. If you had an account from about 10+ years ago there may be a different agreement in place, but typically these fees were always charged.
