Domain Question - .co.uk and .com

Hi there

My website domain is currently .co.uk and is hosted on Wix. I recently brought the .com domain through google although it isn’t currently linked to any site. I am in the process of creating a new site with Shopify as I haven’t been too happy with WIX as a platform in general.

My question is this - If I were to make the .com the main domain for my new shopify website what is the best thing to do with the .co.uk version? Is it better to transfer it to Shopify or just leave it?

In terms of SEO etc I am fully aware that it would be better to transfer the .co.uk domain to Shopify and use that as my primary however my company is only 3 years old and I know that at some point in time I would like to make the switch to .com therefore, I figured I might as well do it now whilst I am in the process of moving to shopify anyway.

Any advice or tips would be much appreciated.

If you plan to make the .com domain the main domain for your new Shopify website, you have a couple of options regarding the .co.uk domain. Here are some considerations to help you decide costco canvas prints:

  1. Redirect the .co.uk domain to the .com domain: If you anticipate eventually transitioning to the .com domain in the future, you can set up a permanent redirect (301 redirect) from the .co.uk domain to the .com domain. This way, any traffic or links pointing to the .co.uk domain will be automatically redirected to the corresponding page on the .com domain. This can help preserve your search engine rankings and ensure a smooth transition for your users.

  2. Maintain separate websites for each domain: If you want to maintain separate websites for the .co.uk and .com domains, you can host the .co.uk domain on Shopify as well. This option allows you to have distinct content, promotions, or pricing for each domain. However, keep in mind that managing multiple websites can be more complex and require additional effort in terms of SEO optimization, content creation, and maintenance.

Considerations for SEO:

  • If you choose to redirect the .co.uk domain to the .com domain, make sure to set up the redirects correctly to preserve the SEO value of any existing links and ensure a smooth transition.
  • If you decide to maintain separate websites, be aware that duplicate content issues can arise if you have similar content on both domains. Ensure that the content on each domain is unique and offers value to the users.
  • Regardless of your choice, it’s important to update your website’s URL structure, internal links, sitemaps, and any other references to reflect the new domain.

Ultimately, the decision depends on your specific business needs, long-term goals, and the effort you’re willing to invest in managing multiple domains. If you foresee transitioning to the .com domain in the future, redirecting the .co.uk domain to the .com domain can provide a smoother user experience and consolidate your brand identity. However, maintaining separate websites can offer more flexibility if you want to cater to specific regional markets or have different content strategies for each domain.
