Thank you for reaching out and posting this question!
Depending on the type of action that was performed after creating the draft order and/or sending the invoice, it’s possible that the draft order was converted into an actual order. The invoice would also be sent through our mailing system, so it may not appear in the sent folder of your inbox. Nevertheless, if you’ve accepted the payment over the phone, marked the draft order as paid, or the customer completed the order using the checkout link from the invoice, then the draft order may have been converted and appear discarded. On that note, it’s important to note that draft orders wouldn’t be considered as standard orders until they are processed, so it’s also possible that the draft order was deleted on accident as well. If you’d like to learn more about deleting orders, then we’ve got more information here: Canceling, archiving, and deleting orders.
If you’re still trying to locate the order, then you can try looking at the orders in the customer’s profile for any orders matching the same date. Once you find an order, you can view the order’s timeline to see if the order was converted from a draft order. However, if you’re unable to locate the draft order, then we’d be happy to access your account and take a closer look. While we’re unable to provide account-specific support via the Shopify Community, we’d be happy to further assist you through live chat, email, or callback. Please visit the Shopify Help Center and log into your account to create a support request.
I’d love to hear if you were able to find out what happened to the draft order or whether our live support team can help you out. Once you’ve resolved this issue, I’d love to hear more about your business and share some resources to help you get started. What kinds of products are you selling? Do you have a marketing plan prepared for your store?
Is it possible to retrieve an email sent through drafts? When I email a customer through drafts, I cannot find a way to retrieve and review it. The draft invoice is there “in drafts” but the body of the email is not. Please Advise… Thank you in advance.
Thank you for joining the thread and posting this question.
There isn’t a way to retrieve and review emailed draft order invoices. However, you can edit the notification template for the draft order invoice and resend the draft invoice if necessary. If you’re trying to see how the email looks, then you can preview the email when you edit the notification template.
I noticed that you’re a new member of our Shopify Community! Once you’ve reviewed your draft order invoice template, I’d love to hear more about your business and share some resources to help you get started.
I have the same question I think. In creating a draft order a type a whole whack of T’s and C’s for the client in the body of the email and for got to BCC myself so now I cant find the email body only the draft order. HALP
I understand that you’re also looking to edit the template for the emailed invoices from draft orders. While there isn’t a way to edit the body of the email through creating a draft order, you can edit the draft order invoice template under the Notification settings. If you need help locating the notification templates in the Shopify admin, then we’ve got a step-by-step guide on that here: Edit notification templates.
That being said, it’s worth noting that there isn’t a way to carbon copy (CC) or blind carbon copy (BCC) customer invoices to yourself on Shopify. However, when editing a notification template, there are options to preview the email or SMS directly within the editor or you can send a test of the email to your inbox as well.
If you have any other questions, then don’t hesitate to let me know!
No Elias, you are not understanding correctly. I am not looking to edit a template. I am saying that in the instance where I have included custom text in the body of an email wherein a draft order is being sent to the customer, say I have written the client a note about the piece of jewellery they have requested a quote on, where in Shopify can I find that email with the test that I sent the client AFTER it has been sent to the client. Also, your statement about not being able to BCC myself when I send a draft order email to a client is false. I am able to do that from the Shopify platform. I am saying that there is an illogical functionality flaw in that I cannot access the original data that was sent to the client in the draft order email. Please advise. Again, I do NOT want a template. I want to access individual emailed draft orders. Your platform gives me the option to write text in the body of the email of a draft order but fails to allow me access to see what it is that I wrote?
There isn’t a field to edit the body of the email when creating a draft order as mentioned. However, if you’re referring to the custom message that you can include with the invoices which can be CC/BCC, then it’s important to note that Shopify is not a mailing system as indicated in our email hosting guide so there isn’t a way to access the sent invoices. On that note, while you can edit the templates under the Notifications settings, you can also consider setting up email hosting for your store.
That being said, I understand that you’d like for a way to view content sent to your customers and I’d be happy to share your feedback with our development team. If Shopify moves forward with any changes to the email processes, then we’ll be sure to announce them on the Shopify Changelog.
In a number of instances, if I forget to BCC myself, that custom message cannot be re-accessed. I have an instance now where I wrote terms and conditions of the order in that custom message field and (murphy’s law) forgot to BCC myself, the client cannot find the invoice in his emails and now i need to resend that invoice. When I click on the draft order resend option
As you say, you are not an email service, sure, (which I have linked to my business email) but I am paying you to provide a platform on which I can interact with customers around invoices. So not being able to view the custom messages after they have been sent to the client is a very clear oversight and yes I would appreciate this being escalated to the Shopify development team. for review.
At this time, it’s not possible to see the content of the email after it’s been sent. With that said, when you send a draft order invoice to the customer, the contents of the email is exactly the same as the ‘Draft order invoice’ customer notification you can find in your settings with a spot for the optional custom message you would have had the option to type out when creating the email.
From the draft order timeline, you will also be able to see a confirmation of the email in fact being sent out:
The fact that Shopify doesn’t keep record of the custom messages created for customers as part of an invoice is absurd. It should be something I can click on and view right there in the order once it’s sent, and after it’s paid. I can certainly copy and paste everything I type up and keep it saved somewhere else on my computer, but sorry, that’s a royal pain especially when I pay for this shop platform to take care of my online biz… This is a major flaw in the invoicing system for Shopify. I used to use Square for sending invoices, and it would not only send all invoices with the customized written order to me via email for record (in addition to emailing my customer), but it would keep the fully written customized message created per customer in tact with the order itself… so if I ever needed to reference the order I could see it all. Why would I want to use an invoice creator that keeps record of nothing actually written in the invoice once it’s sent? There is a much better way this could be worked on the back end. I don’t even care about the whole “template” thing. Each of my invoices are so individualized that that doesn’t really work for me, which is why I use the “create custom message” option that pops up. This really needs fixed.
100% Agree. We do a lot of “one offs” and customs and it’s absurd that those custom messages just vanish after they are sent. As a work around, I try to put it in the Order Notes when making an invoice/draft order.
Yea, my plan is to copy and paste and save to a folder for invoices on my computer. I just thinks it’s really annoying to have to do that. Shopify is supposed to be the leader for online retail… it seems to me that this could be easily fixed somehow? I’m not sure why they haven’t.
Unresolved and waiting for the Shopify dev team to see this as an item of importance. It should be as easy as being able to see what custom text was sent when the order was emailed to the client. Otherwise, wtf is the point of the function.
I’m going to necro this, because this is asinine. How can there be no way to audit this stuff? What if one of my employees sends a message that the customer alters and says we sent to them. We have no recourse to prove that they’re falsifying records.
Just add this to the list of “Shopify doesn’t care about the consumer, and only cares for the bottom line. Cheaper not to fix issues and hope your customers just say ‘Oh, well…’ and just deal with it.”
