Draft Order, taxes not being calcuated on custom item

Hi there,

I’m trying to send a customer an invoice for a “custom item” created while making the draft order. I select charge tax on this item but when I preview the invoice the taxes are not showing up. (doesn’t even show up as a line item)

I’m having this same problem. Has anyone found a solution?

Hi @CreativeEvrAftr and @ConceptHardware ,

Thank you both for reaching out. Can you please confirm to me if both of you are in the United States, and if the orders you’re trying to create are for addresses based in states where you have a tax nexus?

Whether or not you have a tax nexus in a state will determine whether or not Shopify’s tax system will charge taxes on an order. For example, in the example provided by @CreativeEvrAftr , sales tax will only be generated if you have a tax nexus in Florida. If you do not have a physical nexus in Florida (e.g. an office, warehouse, or employees) or an economic one (which is based on criteria such as the number of sales you make to a state, or the amount of revenue you earn) then sales tax will not be charged as you likely do not need to remit sales taxes to the tax authorities in Florida.

I hope this makes sense, and please provide more information if you can and I’d be happy to help further.

I have the same problem. It never did this to me until the last few months. Have you came up with a solution?

I have had the same problem, but not just on custom, but all my products. If it is created in Draft, there is no taxes added. If it is created in my POS in a cart, taxes are there, but when I save it as a Draft and look at it in my Admin, the taxes are not there. But if I pull it up on my cart again, the taxes are there. THEN if it is paid for in my POS it shows a completed draft with no taxes and a paid order with taxes!! So it is just the Draft taxes that are the issue. I was told this was being expedited, but feedback I have gotten back so far does not address is issue. I think this is very well explained. I was also sent to this tread by the help person, but this is not helping. Don’t know what to do because I have invoices I need to send out asap! I have waited long enough, so I had to use Square to send out my invoices because I can charge tax there. I will have to continue to do that until a solution is found for this problem.

Hello, I am having a similar issue where sales tax does not calculate on custom items I add to an invoice. I am in the US and only operating in my state. We do not ship products but find that the sales tax only shows when we select shipping. It is also the only way we can add delivery without doing it manually. I would like to send my invoices without having to select “shipping” to create a more seamless process for the customer at checkout. Any assistance you can provide is appreciated.

Hi, @cbckw . Thank you for that context!

It’s difficult to say exactly what’s happening without seeing your account so for the most accurate help I’d recommend reaching out to our support team through the Help Center here. This will allow us to look into this with you in more detail. That being said, sales tax should be calculated for custom items if you click the Item is taxable option that appears when you add a custom item. Can you also tell us more about what why you don’t want to select the shipping setting? If you’re delivering your items you would typically want to select the Add shipping or delivery setting to manage this. Once I have more information about the issues this is causing at checkout for your customers, I may have more suggestions to help.

Thanks for responding! When we select shipping, it presents some confusion
for our customers when checking out. We have checked it when delivering,
but the majority of our products are picked up by our customers. We heard
back from support and it seems that there is no solution for a business
like ours (local catering) and this is something Shopify is looking into.
This is only an issue with custom items. So according to shopify, the only
work around would be to create a product listing then a custom order.
That’s more work than I’d like to do so we’ll just have to make it work for
now.

Hello. I am making custom draft orders as well. They are local pick up and do not require shipping. My state taxes are not being added all of a sudden. How can I change it so taxes will be charged for local pick up customers? This just started last month. I haven’t changed any settings.

Hey @JessStein .

Thanks for reaching out.

If you have successfully set up the tax profile for your location - the corresponding taxes will be applied to the orders depending on you and your customers location. With that being said, I would suggest taking a look into our US tax reference and EU tax reference. Additionally, we have more details available on tax sourcing to help determine how the taxes are applied to your orders.

Let us know if you have any questions.
