DTC top focuses

Topic summary

A user seeks advice on driving DTC sales without significant ad spend. The response emphasizes building community and engagement as alternatives to paid advertising, which is becoming less effective.

Three recommended strategies:

  1. Narrow customer targeting - Identify and focus on a very specific core customer segment initially

  2. Strategic outreach - Partner with influencers, engage with relevant online communities and blogs, and offer discount codes to reach target customers

  3. Sustained focus before expansion - Maintain tight focus on the core customer until achieving recurring sales (implementing early subscription models is advised), then expand gradually over years rather than months

The discussion concludes with the original poster expressing gratitude for the guidance.

For DTC focused products, what are the top 3 things you’d do to create sales if you don’t have a lot of money to throw at ads?

Hi Poeandco. This is the million dollar question. Bottom-line is that you need to build a community around your brand to build engagement if you’re not going ads based. It is getting harder to reach customers through ads so top 3 things:

  1. Identify core customer and be very specific initially.

  2. Develop a strategy to reach this core customer (can you work with an influencer or two to help raise awareness, are there online groups, blogs etc. that you can work with to offer discount codes etc.)

  3. Stay incredibly focused on your core customer until you see recurring sales (building in a subscription model early is important) and then expand the next slowly (i.e. years vs. months)
