Hello Shopify Product Team,
I am writing to formally request a critical enhancement to Shopify’s native shipping profiles: the ability to apply shipping surcharges or create exceptions to free shipping rules based on specific ZIP/postal code ranges.
With the massive structural shift in carrier pricing—specifically the elimination of ounce-based pricing for lightweight packages to over 17,000 rural US ZIP codes—independent merchants are facing a severe margin squeeze.
The Problem:
Right now, Shopify Shipping Profiles only allow us to create zones by broad regions (countries or states). If we offer a “Free Shipping over $X” rule for the United States, we cannot natively exclude or add a surcharge for these newly penalized rural ZIP codes. Forcing small businesses to upgrade to a higher Shopify tier or pay for expensive third-party apps just to handle basic ZIP-code routing is unsustainable.
The Requested Feature:
We need native functionality within Settings > Shipping and Delivery that allows merchants to:
- Create Sub-Zones by ZIP Code: Group specific ZIP/postal codes together within a state or country profile.
- Apply Shipping Surcharges: Add a fixed dollar amount (e.g., a $2.50 “Rural Delivery Surcharge”) to a customer’s order if their address matches that specific ZIP code list.
- Exclude ZIP Codes from Free Shipping: A simple checkbox on free shipping rules that states: “Apply to all areas except the following ZIP codes.”
This feature is no longer a luxury; it is a necessity for merchants trying to survive rising carrier surcharges while keeping shipping affordable for the majority of our customers.
