Hi @radaApeta ,

To edit the meta descriptions for specific product pages, you can follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to Products in your Shopify admin panel.
  2. Select the product you wish to edit.
  3. Scroll down to the Search engine listing preview section and click Edit website SEO.
  4. Modify the Meta description for that product to tailor it for SEO.

Regarding collection pages beyond the first (e.g., page 2 or 3), Shopify does not provide built-in functionality for unique meta descriptions on paginated collection pages. The default meta information is carried over from the first page. This is common and typically, search engines understand pagination tags

(rel="next" and rel="prev")

helping them treat these pages as part of the same collection.

SEOPro could assist by analyzing your products and collection pages to identify any missing or suboptimal meta descriptions and offering bulk-editing capabilities. This would simplify SEO optimization for product and collection pages while providing suggestions to align with best practices.

In Shopify, editing the meta descriptions for individual product pages or the first page of collections is straightforward, but for sub-pages of collections (e.g., the second or third pages), there isn’t a direct way to edit meta descriptions for each pagination page. However, there are some workarounds and tips that might help with SEO and control over what Google shows.

1. Editing Meta Descriptions for Product and Collection Pages- For product pages, you can edit the meta description by going to Products > [Select Product] > Search engine listing preview. Here, you can customize the meta title and description for each product.

  • For the main collection pages, go to Products > Collections > [Select Collection] > Search engine listing preview to edit the meta description.

2. Handling Pagination for Collection Pages- Unfortunately, Shopify does not offer built-in options to set unique meta descriptions for each paginated page of a collection (e.g., collection pages 2, 3, etc.).

  • Shopify automatically uses the main collection’s meta description for all paginated pages. If you’re seeing lower-ranked pages on Google, it may be because these pages have been indexed separately, but with the same meta description as the main collection page.

3. Using Canonical Tags to Control Google Indexing- Shopify automatically adds canonical tags to paginated collection pages, signaling to Google that these pages are part of the main collection page. This helps reduce the chances of Google indexing and displaying separate paginated pages.

  • If you’re still seeing multiple pages (e.g., page 2, page 3) indexed, it may be due to Google’s algorithm and crawling preferences.

4. Advanced Workaround Using Liquid Code- If you’re comfortable with Shopify’s Liquid coding, you can add code to dynamically change the meta description for paginated pages. This will still apply the same meta tag, but it can provide more context for each page. Here’s a basic example:

{% if paginate.current_page > 1 %}

{% else %}

{% endif %}

  • Add this code in your theme’s collection.liquid template. This approach can create a unique description for each paginated page.

5. Using an SEO App for Greater Control- Some Shopify SEO apps, such as Plug in SEO or Smart SEO, offer additional tools to manage meta descriptions and may have options to address pagination issues. While they may not allow direct editing of each paginated page, they often provide better control over SEO settings across the site.

6. Submit URLs to Google Search Console- Once you’ve made changes, use Google Search Console to request re-indexing of your main collection page. This can help encourage Google to focus on the primary collection URL and avoid showing paginated URLs in search results.

In summary, while Shopify does have limitations for managing meta descriptions on paginated collection pages, the steps above can help you improve control and guide search engines toward displaying the main page for collections.

If you have other questions, I am willing to answer them more.

Hi @radaApeta

After checking, it is available to edit meta description in product pages directly from Shopify, but unavailable to do so for all collection pages. Therefore you need an SEO APP to do this work for you.

It is recommended here to use SEOAnt for this work, as it displays all web pages including collection pages and you can follow the Google SEO Advice provided inside. Please click here to install, and to avoid higher costs in building SEO, you can use this coupon (SEOAnt 30% Jeffery) to get 30% discount for first two months.

Hope my answer helps you, thank you!
